Winter Tires in Austria: Obligation and Regulations 2026

Find out when you need winter tires and how to avoid a fine of up to €5000.

Traveling by car to Austria in winter is a challenge even for experienced drivers. Alpine roads can surprise with sudden black ice even in early spring. Therefore, Austrian regulations regarding winter equipment are among the most stringent in Europe. The key to a safe and stress-free journey is understanding the so-called situational obligation to drive on winter tires.

Official winter period in Austria:

November 1st – April 15th

During this period, regulations require winter tires in "winter road conditions".

Until when winter tires in Austria? Analysis of regulations

According to the Road Traffic Act, during the period from November 1st to April 15th, passenger cars (cat. B), cars with trailers, and light trucks must be equipped with winter tires if there is snow, slush, or ice on the road.

It's worth noting the word "situational". If on March 10th you drive through Vienna in full sun on a dry surface, you are not threatened with a fine for summer tires. However, when entering higher mountain areas, where the weather changes in a few minutes, the lack of proper tires becomes illegal the moment the first snowflake appears on the asphalt.

Technical requirements: Tread is fundamental

Many drivers from Poland are unaware that a tire considered functional in our country may be considered a summer tire in Austria. Austrian law defines minimum technical parameters:

1. Tread depth (4 mm!)

This is the most important parameter during a police check. For radial tires (most common), the minimum tread depth is 4 mm. If your tires have a 3 mm tread, the police officer will treat them as summer tires, which entails a high penalty in winter conditions.

2. Homologation and symbols

Tires must have the M+S (Mud and Snow) marking or the increasingly required throughout Europe symbol 3PMSF (snowflake on a mountain background). All-season tires are permissible provided they have these symbols and adequate tread.

Fines for lack of winter tires

Austrian tariffs are merciless. The fine for driving on summer tires in winter conditions starts from €60 (during a routine check). However, if you cause a hazard or block the road due to a lack of tires, the penalty can increase to €5,000.

Worse still, in the event of a collision, insurers in Austria apply the principle of limited liability if the vehicle was not prepared for winter. This may mean having to cover repair costs out of pocket.

Snow chains – When are they necessary?

Even the best winter tires are not enough on steep climbs in Tyrol or Vorarlberg. When you see a round, blue sign with the symbol of a white wheel with chains, you must put them on. This also applies to 4x4 vehicles, unless a sign below indicates otherwise.

Important: In Austria, only chains with ÖNORM V5117 certification are permitted. So-called "tire socks" or other textile alternatives usually do not meet these standards and are not honored by the police in places where chains are mandatory.

Summary – Checklist 2026

Before you embark on a trip to Austria before April 15th, make sure that:

  • Your tires have at least 4 mm tread.
  • You have snow chains suitable for your wheels in the trunk.
  • You have winter windshield washer fluid with high frost resistance.
  • You have checked the validity of the vignette for highways.

Last updated regulations: March 2026.
