Vignettes for Holidays in the Czech Republic 2026: Prices, Changes, and Step-by-Step Purchase Instructions

For many Poles, the Czech Republic is a gateway to the Alps, but also an increasingly popular winter travel destination in its own right. Špindlerův Mlýn or Czarna Góra entice with their proximity and prices. Regardless of whether you are traveling directly to the Czech Republic or just in transit to Austria – you must take care of road tolls. In 2026, the Czech vignette system offers new possibilities, including the long-awaited 1-day vignette. Find out how not to overpay and avoid fines.

Electronic System in the Czech Republic – No More Stickers

For several years now, our southern neighbors have fully abandoned traditional windshield stickers. The Czech toll collection system (elektronická dálniční známka) is 100% digital. This means great convenience for drivers – you don't have to look for sales points at the border, stand in queues at petrol stations, or worry about removing old vignettes from your windshield. Everything is done based on the vehicle's license plate number.

A system of cameras placed on highway gantries and in police and customs service vehicles automatically scans license plates. If your number is not listed in the database as paid – a fine is almost certain. That's why it's so important to buy a vignette for the Czech Republic with appropriate advance or use services offering immediate processing.

💡 Did you know? (New: 1-Day Vignette)

Since March 2024, in accordance with an EU directive, the Czech Republic has introduced a one-day vignette. This is a revolutionary change for people traveling, for example, to ski in Austria or Italy and transiting through the Czech Republic. In 2026, this option is still available and enjoys immense popularity. Remember, however, that the 1-day vignette is valid until 23:59 on the selected day (and not for 24 hours from the moment of purchase in every case - check the conditions carefully when purchasing!).

Types and Prices of Vignettes in the Czech Republic 2026

Choosing the right vignette depends on the nature of your trip. The Czech Republic offers four main time variants for passenger cars up to 3.5 tons. It is worth analyzing your travel plan to avoid overpaying. Sometimes purchasing two one-day vignettes (for outbound and return journeys) is cheaper than one 10-day vignette, but this depends on the current price list and the length of stay.

1. 1-Day Vignette (D)

Ideal for transit. If you leave Poland in the morning and cross the border into Austria on the same day, this is the cheapest option. Remember that for your return in a week, you will need a second such vignette.

2. 10-Day Vignette (10D)

A classic choice for winter holidays in the Czech Republic itself or for a week-long trip to the Alps if you want 'peace of mind' and don't want to worry about return dates (provided you fit within 10 days). If you leave on Saturday and return the following Sunday (9 days stay + 2 days travel = 11 days), the 10-day vignette will expire before your return!

3. 30-Day Vignette (1M)

A solution for those planning a longer stay or frequent trips within a month. If you are planning two weekend ski trips to Czech resorts two weeks apart, this option might be the most cost-effective.

4. Annual Vignette (1R)

For frequent visitors, business travelers, and border residents. Interestingly, unlike many other countries, in the Czech Republic, an annual vignette is valid for 365 days from the date specified by the user (a so-called rolling year), not for a calendar year.

Czech motorways are well-maintained, but in winter they require caution and a valid vignette.

Eco Price – Hybrid and Electric Cars

The Czech Republic promotes ecology by offering discounts for low-emission vehicles. However, the system is a bit more complicated for foreigners:

  • Eco Price (25% discount): Applies to vehicles powered by natural gas (CNG) or biomethane. Note: LPG does not qualify for a discount!
  • Eco Price (50% or 75% discount depending on emissions): Often applies to Plug-in hybrid cars with CO2 emissions below 50 g/km.
  • Electric cars (BEV): In theory, they are exempt from tolls. In practice, cars registered outside the Czech Republic are not automatically exempt. To benefit from the exemption, a special application (form) must be submitted to the Czech road authority, which requires time and sending documents by post or electronically with a qualified signature.

⚠️ Important note for owners of electric cars from Poland:

The mere possession of green license plates from Poland does not automatically exempt you from the toll in the Czech Republic! If you have not submitted the appropriate application for exemption (which is a bureaucratic procedure), it is safer to purchase a vignette at the standard price or Eco price (if available online) to avoid fines and explanations during inspection.

Winter Equipment in the Czech Republic – Regulations 2026

Similar to Austria, the Czech police are sensitive to winter safety. Regulations clearly state: in the period from November 1 to March 31, winter tires are mandatory if there is a continuous layer of snow, ice, or frost on the road, or if weather conditions indicate that such phenomena may occur.

In practice, when going on a winter holiday to the mountains, winter tires are an absolute must – both legally and from a common-sense perspective. The tread of a winter tire in the Czech Republic must have a minimum depth of 4 mm (for cars up to 3.5t). This is a more stringent requirement than in Poland (where lower values are permitted), so be sure to check the condition of your tires before departure.

FAQ – Czech Vignettes 2026

Can I buy a vignette with a backdated validity?

No. The system does not allow purchasing a vignette with a past date. If you entered a toll section without a vignette, buy it immediately – you might make it before a camera check, although the risk of a fine exists.

Do motorcycles need a vignette in the Czech Republic?

No. In 2026, motorcycles are still exempt from tolls for using Czech motorways.

What is the fine for not having a vignette?

The on-the-spot fine can be up to 5000 CZK (approx. 900 PLN), and in administrative proceedings, even up to 20 000 CZK. Moreover, if you have an eco exemption without proper grounds, the penalty can be up to 100 000 CZK.

Do I need to print the confirmation?

It is not legally required, as the police check numbers in the system. However, we recommend having the PDF file on your phone or a printout for your peace of mind, e.g., in case of a system verification failure.

The Czech Republic is not only a transit country but a wonderful place for winter recreation. Regardless of your travel destination, remember about road tolls. The Winiety24.eu team wishes you a safe journey!
