Eurovignette 2026: where it applies, who needs it, how much it costs and how to avoid fines
The Eurovignette is an electronic road user charge for heavy goods vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of 12 tonnes or more. In 2026, it remains especially important for transport operations through Luxembourg and Sweden. In the Netherlands, it applies only until 30 June 2026.
What is the Eurovignette?
The Eurovignette is an electronic charge for using selected motorways and toll roads by heavy goods vehicles. It generally applies to trucks with a maximum authorised mass of 12 tonnes or more and is mainly relevant for transport companies, fleet operators and drivers involved in international freight transport.
The name can be confusing because many drivers associate the word “vignette” with the standard motorway vignettes used by passenger cars. However, the Eurovignette does not replace national car vignettes for countries such as the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary or Slovenia.
The Eurovignette is stored electronically. It is linked to the vehicle registration number, country of registration, number of axles, emission category and selected validity period. There is no sticker to attach to the windscreen.
Eurovignette in brief
- for heavy goods vehicles from 12 tonnes,
- electronic and linked to the vehicle registration number,
- valid in Eurovignette countries on toll road sections,
- available for one day, one week, one month or one year,
- price depends on the number of axles, Euro emission standard and CO2 emission class.
Where is the Eurovignette valid in 2026?
The Eurovignette is not valid throughout Europe. It is a shared system used by selected countries and should not be confused with national e-vignettes for passenger cars.
| Country | Status in 2026 | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Luxembourg | Eurovignette required | Relevant for heavy goods vehicles from 12 tonnes on the toll road network. |
| Sweden | Eurovignette required | Important for transport to Scandinavia and international freight routes. |
| Netherlands | Only until 30 June 2026 | From 1 July 2026, the Eurovignette in the Netherlands is replaced by a distance-based toll system. |
| Denmark | No longer a standard Eurovignette country | Denmark uses its own road toll system for heavy vehicles. |
Eurovignette in Luxembourg
Luxembourg remains an important Eurovignette country. Because of its location between Belgium, France and Germany, it is relevant for many international transport routes.
Eurovignette in Sweden
Sweden also remains part of the Eurovignette system. This is particularly important for freight transport to Scandinavia, combined routes involving ferries and long-distance routes in Northern Europe.
Eurovignette in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is a special case in 2026. Until 30 June 2026, the Eurovignette may still be required. From 1 July 2026, it will be replaced by a distance-based heavy vehicle charge.
Netherlands: Eurovignette only until 30 June 2026
On 1 July 2026, the Eurovignette will be finally discontinued in the Netherlands. For transport companies, the exact travel date is therefore crucial. In the first half of 2026, the Eurovignette may still be relevant; after that, the new Dutch rules will apply.
Who must buy the Eurovignette?
The Eurovignette applies to vehicles and vehicle combinations with a maximum authorised mass of 12 tonnes or more that are used for goods transport on toll road sections in Eurovignette countries.
Typical vehicles subject to the Eurovignette
- heavy goods vehicles from 12 tonnes,
- tractor-trailer units and vehicle combinations used in freight transport,
- international transport fleets,
- commercial vehicles using toll sections in Eurovignette countries.
Who normally does not need the Eurovignette?
- passenger cars,
- motorcycles,
- most motorhomes below 12 tonnes,
- light vans below the weight threshold,
- private holiday trips by passenger car.
Travelling by passenger car?
In many countries you do not need a Eurovignette, but a national e-vignette. Before your trip, check: Czech Republic vignette, Austria vignette, Slovakia vignettes, Hungary vignettes and Slovenia vignettes.
How much does the Eurovignette cost in 2026?
The price depends on the validity period, the number of axles, the Euro emission standard and the CO2 emission class. As a rule, older vehicles with lower environmental standards and vehicles with more axles pay higher charges.

How to buy the Eurovignette online
The Eurovignette is booked electronically. To make a booking, you need the vehicle registration number, country of registration, number of axles, emission data and the required validity period. A printout is not required, but it is worth keeping the confirmation.

Eurovignette checks and fines
Because the Eurovignette is electronic, it can be checked using the vehicle registration number. Problems may arise not only when there is no booking, but also when the registration number, number of axles, validity period or emission class is incorrect.
Eurovignette and vignettes in the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia
The Eurovignette is not the same as a passenger car e-vignette. For a private car journey to Croatia, Italy, Austria or Slovenia, you usually need national vignettes or local motorway tolls, but not the Eurovignette.
| Feature | Eurovignette | National e-vignette |
|---|---|---|
| Who is it for? | Heavy goods vehicles from 12 tonnes | Usually passenger cars, motorcycles, motorhomes or light vehicles |
| Where? | Luxembourg, Sweden, Netherlands until 30 June 2026 | A specific country, e.g. Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary or Slovenia |
| Form | Electronic road user charge for trucks | Electronic vignette, usually linked to the vehicle registration number |
Example: driving to Croatia by passenger car
If you drive to Croatia by passenger car from Germany or Poland, you do not need a Eurovignette. Depending on your route, however, you should check the right national vignettes:
- Czech Republic vignette,
- Austria vignette,
- Slovakia vignettes,
- Hungary vignettes,
- Slovenia vignettes,
- Croatia route tolls and vignette costs.
