Who needs an Umwelt-Pickerl sticker in 2026?
The Austrian air protection system differs from the German one. In 2026, the obligation to have a colored environmental sticker (Umwelt-Pickerl) primarily applies to commercial vehicles.
Category N vehicles (N1, N2, N3): All delivery vans, trucks, and tractor units.
Vehicles with a "grid": Even a passenger car, if it has N1 category entered in its registration document, must have a sticker.
Tourists (Category M1): Private passenger cars are still exempt from this obligation in 2026.
Where do environmental zones apply?
Entering the regions below with a Category N vehicle without a valid sticker risks an automatic penalty recorded by cameras:
🏰 Vienna
The entire city area is a zone with stricter emission standards.
🏔️ Tyrol
Key section of the A12 motorway (Inntal) with a "sectoral ban" for older vehicles.
🏭 Styria
The region of Graz and its surroundings, where PM10 emissions are fought.
🌉 Upper Austria
Sections of the A1 motorway around Linz subject to IG-L restrictions.
Fines and controls in 2026
Austria is known for the inevitability of its penalties. ANPR camera systems are integrated with vehicle databases across the EU.
- No sticker: Administrative penalty up to 2,180 EUR.
- IG-L zones: Exceeding the speed limit in an air protection zone results in a double fine (for speeding and for polluting the environment).
Frequent questions about zones in Austria
Does my camper need a sticker?
If the camper is registered as a special camping vehicle (M1) – you do not need a sticker. However, if it is based on a truck and has N1/N2 category – a sticker is mandatory.
Does an e-vignette replace an environmental sticker?
No. An e-vignette is a fee for using motorways, and the Umwelt-Pickerl sticker is a permit to enter air protection zones due to emission standards.
