One-day vignette in Austria and Czech Republic 2026 – How it works and when is it worth it?
The 2026 holiday season brought the full establishment of a revolutionary road toll format in Central Europe – the **one-day vignette (1-day vignette)**. Introduced under pressure from EU directives, the one-day vignette in Czech Republic and Austria immediately became a hit among drivers. But is it always the most cost-effective choice?
The 1-day vignette validity rule: The biggest trap
The key thing you need to understand before purchasing is the definition of 'day of validity'. **A 1-day vignette is NOT valid for 24 hours from the moment of purchase.** In both Czech Republic and Austria, the one-day vignette is valid for a given calendar day – from 00:00 to 23:59.
Example: If you buy a one-day vignette on Friday at 8:00 PM, it will only be valid for less than 4 hours (until midnight). If your journey extends until 1:00 AM on Saturday, from midnight you are driving without a valid toll, which automatic cameras record.
Buying a vignette last minute?
Skip 18 days of waiting on official state websites. Here you can buy 1-day and 10-day e-vignettes with immediate system activation.
Cost calculation: When to choose 1 day, and when 10 days?
The one-day vignette was created for people travelling in transit 'in one go' (e.g., a quick trip to Croatia without an overnight stay on the way). Let's see how the math looks for the 2026 season for Austria:
- 1-day vignette (Austria): 9.60 EUR
- 10-day vignette (Austria): 12.80 EUR
If you are going on a 7-day holiday (from Saturday to Saturday), buying two one-day vignettes (for the day of departure and the day of return) will cost you **19.20 EUR**.
In this situation, it is much more profitable to buy one 10-day vignette for **12.80 EUR**, which will easily cover both days. The 1-day vignette becomes profitable only for trips longer than 10 days, where the cost of a two-month vignette (30.10 EUR) exceeds the cost of two 1-day vignettes.
