Traveling through Austria by camper van is a real pleasure – alpine landscapes, excellent quality roads, picturesque passes, and superb tourist infrastructure attract thousands of caravanning enthusiasts every year. Before you set off, however, you must take care of one very important issue: road tolls and the vignette.

Does a camper van up to 3.5 t require a vignette in Austria? Which vignette to choose? Are there additional fees? What are the consequences of not having a vignette? In this guide, you will find a complete set of practical information.

Does a camper van up to 3.5 t need a vignette in Austria?

Yes – a camper van with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) up to 3.5 tons must have a vignette for traveling on motorways and expressways in Austria.

In the Austrian road toll system, the vehicle's GVW is key, not its purpose. This means that:

  • a camper van up to 3.5 t is treated like a passenger car,
  • a camper van above 3.5 t is subject to a completely different toll system (GO-Box).

If your camper van has a GVW of up to 3500 kg indicated in its registration document – you are subject to the standard motorway vignette.

Which vignette to choose for a camper van up to 3.5 t?

In Austria, the following types of vignettes are available for vehicles up to 3.5 t:

  1. 1-day vignette: New in the Austrian system – a good option for a short transit journey.
  2. 10-day vignette: Most often chosen by tourists passing through Austria on their way to Italy, Croatia, or Slovenia.
  3. 2-month vignette: A good option for those planning a longer stay or a touring trip around Austria.
  4. Annual vignette: Valid from December 1 of the previous year to January 31 of the following year (14 months of validity in total). Cost-effective for frequent trips.

Traditional or electronic vignette?

You have two forms of vignette to choose from:

✔ Adhesive vignette (traditional)

  • purchased at petrol stations, at the border, or online with physical collection,
  • must be affixed to the inside of the front windshield,
  • valid immediately after purchase.

✔ Electronic vignette (digital)

  • assigned to the vehicle's license plate number,
  • does not require sticking to the windshield,
  • the most convenient option – you can buy it without leaving home, e.g., on the Winiety24.eu website.

Note: When purchasing online on the official Austrian website as a private individual, the electronic vignette only becomes valid after 18 days (due to the right of withdrawal). By using verified intermediaries, you can often bypass this period and get a vignette valid almost immediately.

Does a camper van up to 3.5 t pay additional fees besides the vignette?

Yes – in Austria, in addition to the vignette, there are also so-called special toll sections (Sondermautstrecken). These are selected tunnels, alpine passes, and some sections of motorways. On these routes, the vignette is not enough – an additional fee must be paid.

Examples of toll sections:

  • A13 Brenner Motorway (towards Italy),
  • Tauernautobahn A10 (Tauern and Katschberg tunnel),
  • Gleinalm Tunnel (A9),
  • Karawankentunnel (A11).

The fee can be paid at toll booths, online, or in the form of a digital route toll. If you plan to travel through the Alps – check the route and costs in advance, as fees can be significant.

How to check if your camper van qualifies for a vignette up to 3.5 t?

The key is the gross vehicle weight (GVW) entered in the registration document in field F.2.

  • up to 3500 kg → standard vignette,
  • above 3500 kg → GO-Box system.

It does not matter whether the camper van is a factory-built model or a converted bus, how many people are traveling in it, or whether it is registered as a special camping vehicle. Only the GVW matters.

What are the consequences of not having a vignette in Austria?

Austria is known for its very effective controls. The system includes gantry cameras, road patrols, and mobile checks. Penalties are high:

  • no vignette → administrative fine (several hundred euros),
  • no fee for special section → also a high penalty,
  • attempt to manipulate the vignette (e.g., re-sticking) → very serious financial consequences.

Importantly – the fine usually has to be paid on the spot. If refused, the case may be referred to administrative proceedings, where the penalty increases.

Does the vignette apply to all roads in Austria?

No. The vignette is required on motorways (marked „A”) and expressways (marked „S”). On national roads (Bundesstraßen), a vignette is not needed.

In practice, this means that theoretically, you can travel through Austria without a vignette by avoiding motorways. However, the journey will be significantly longer, passing through towns may be difficult, and some regions introduce local traffic restrictions. When traveling by camper van, motorways are definitely more convenient.

How to correctly affix the vignette in a camper van?

In the case of a traditional vignette, you should:

  1. Peel it off the protective film.
  2. Affix it to the inside of the front windshield.
  3. Place it in the upper left corner or near the rearview mirror.
  4. Stick it directly onto the glass – not on film or a holder.

The vignette must be permanently affixed. Attempts at „saving” by sticking it with tape result in high fines.

Vignette and caravan – is an additional one needed?

If you are towing a caravan and the entire combination does not exceed 3.5 t GVW of the towing vehicle, a vignette is only required for the car. The caravan does not require a separate vignette.

Austria by camper van – practical tips before departure

  • 1. Check GVW: Many camper vans have a „just-enough” GVW of 3500 kg. Overloading can result not only in a fine but also in insurance problems.
  • 2. Plan your route through the Alps: Some tunnels are highly tolled – sometimes it pays to choose an alternative scenic route.
  • 3. Check vehicle height: Some parking lots and local roads have height restrictions.
  • 4. Refuel earlier: Fuel at motorways can be more expensive.
  • 5. Parking and overnight stays: Austria has a well-developed network of stellplatz, campsites, and parking areas. „Wild” camping is restricted in many regions – check local regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I buy a vignette at the border?

Yes – sales points are available at major border crossings and petrol stations. You can also do it faster online at Winiety24.eu.

Does the control check the license plate number?

Yes – in the case of a digital vignette, the system automatically reads the license plates.

Do motorcycles and camper vans have the same vignette?

No – motorcycles have a separate category. A camper van up to 3.5 t uses the passenger car category.

Are there different rules on Sundays?

No – the vignette is valid at all times, regardless of the day of the week.

Summary

If you are traveling by camper van with a GVW of up to 3500 kg:

  • You must have a vignette for motorways and expressways.
  • You can choose a 1-day, 10-day, 2-month, or annual vignette.
  • You can buy a traditional or electronic version on the Winiety24.eu website.
  • You will pay extra on selected sections.
  • Lack of a vignette means a high fine.

Austria is a caravanning-friendly country, but at the same time very strict regarding compliance with road regulations. Therefore, it is worth preparing in advance and avoiding unnecessary costs. A well-chosen vignette is a small expense compared to the comfort of traveling through some of the most beautiful routes in Europe. If you are planning a trip by camper van through Austria – include road tolls in your budget and hit the road stress-free.
