I bought vignettes for the Czech Republic, Austria, and Slovenia in one order. No stress at the borders, I just entered my camper's license plate and it was done. Incredible convenience! ~ Marek W.
Most popular routes
- Poland → Czech Republic → Austria → Slovenia → Croatia (most common choice for the Adriatic)
- Poland → Czech Republic → Austria → Italy (direction for the Dolomites and Lake Garda)
- Poland → Slovakia → Austria → Italy / Croatia (alternative from Eastern Poland)
Each of these countries has its own road toll system, so it's worth preparing before you leave.
Vehicle GVW is key
If your camper has a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW, entered in the registration document in field F.2) up to 3.5 tons – it is subject to the vignette system or standard tolls, exactly the same as a passenger car.
Above 3.5 t, completely different systems apply for heavy vehicles (e.g., kilometer-based tolls, GO-Box in Austria, DarsGo in Slovenia).
Czech Republic – electronic vignette
System
Only an electronic vignette assigned to the license plate number. No stickers.
Available options
1-day (new), 10-day, 30-day, 365-day.
Control
Automatic cameras on gantries reading license plates.
Austria – vignette + toll tunnels
In Austria, a vignette is mandatory on motorways and expressways. It is available in both digital and traditional sticker form.
- 1-day
- 10-day
- 2-month
- Annual
Note: Additionally, selected tunnels and special sections (so-called Sondermautstrecken) are subject to tolls, e.g., Brenner Pass (A13), Karawanken Tunnel (A11), or Tauern Motorway (A10).
Slovenia – short section, mandatory vignette
When travelling towards Croatia (even if it's just a short section through Maribor), an electronic vignette (e-vinjeta) is mandatory:
- 7-day
- 1-month
- Annual
Croatia and Italy – toll gate system
Croatia 🇭🇷
There are no vignettes in Croatia. The toll is collected at motorway toll gates (by card, cash, or via the ENC system) and depends on the distance travelled and the vehicle category.
Italy 🇮🇹
In Italy, a toll gate system also applies – you pay for the actual distance (so-called pedaggio). The amount of the toll depends on the number of axles and the vehicle's height above the front axle.
How to plan your vignette purchase?
- Buy vignettes online before you travel: Avoid queues at petrol stations and the stress of looking for a point of sale at the border.
- Set the correct date: Remember to provide the correct entry date for each country.
- Check license plate accuracy: The most common reason for fines is a typo in the license plate number.
- Buy everything in one place: Save time by using portals that offer vignette packages for the entire route.
