Winter Tyres in Czechia 2026: When are they required? Regulations and Signs

Winter Tyres in Czechia: Regulations and Requirements 2026
A guide to Czech roads – from deadlines to mandatory equipment.
A trip to Czechia in winter, whether to the Giant Mountains or Prague, requires Polish drivers to be familiar with local regulations. The Czech Republic, like Austria, places a strong emphasis on winter safety. Although penalties are slightly lower than in its southern neighbours, the strictness regarding tyre technical condition is almost identical.
Obligation to use winter tyres in Czechia:
1 November – 31 March
During this period, winter tyres are required if there is snow, ice, or they can be expected on the road.
When exactly do you need winter tyres?
In Czechia, this obligation is regulated by the Road Traffic Act (Zákon o provozu na pozemních komunikacích). Winter tyres are mandatory in two cases:
- When there is a continuous layer of snow, ice, or black ice on the road.
- When, due to weather conditions, it can be assumed that such conditions will occur during driving.
Sign "Winter equipment" (Zimní výbava)
In Czechia, it is crucial to pay attention to the blue circular sign with a car and snowflake symbol (sign C 15a). In places where it is displayed, winter tyres are mandatory regardless of the current weather and road surface conditions, throughout the period from 1 November to 31 March.
Technical requirements for tyres in Czechia
Czech road services meticulously check two tyre parameters during routine winter controls:
1. Tread depth – 4 mm
For passenger cars up to 3.5 tonnes, the minimum winter tyre tread depth is 4 mm on all wheels. For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, this requirement increases to 6 mm on drive wheels.
2. Tyre markings
A winter tyre is considered one that has the marking M+S, M.S., M&S or the symbol 3PMSF (snowflake on a mountain background). All-season tyres are accepted, provided they meet the 4 mm tread requirement.
| Vehicle Category | Period | Min. Tread Depth |
|---|---|---|
| Passenger cars (up to 3.5t) | 1.11 - 31.03 | 4 mm |
| Trucks (over 3.5t) | 1.11 - 31.03 | 6 mm (drive wheels) |
| Trailers | Recommended | - |
Fines and penalties in Czechia
If the police stop you while driving on summer tyres in winter conditions or past a "Zimní výbava" sign, you must be prepared for the consequences:
- On-the-spot fine: up to 2 500 CZK (approx. 450-500 PLN).
- Administrative proceedings: the penalty may be significantly higher if the case goes to the authorities.
- Prohibition of further travel: in extreme conditions, the police may prevent further travel until tyres are changed or snow clears.

Chains are only mandatory where road signs indicate it (blue sign with a wheel in chains). They must be fitted on the drive wheels. Textile chains are also permissible, but only if they have appropriate certification and homologation allowing them to be used on Czech roads.
