Knowledge Compendium: Safe Travel Abroad

Buying vignettes is just the first step to a safe journey. Many people forget that standard TPL insurance only protects those harmed by you, not you and your car. On the other hand, the EHIC card, though useful, has drastic limitations. Below you will find a detailed guide on why additional protection is an investment that pays off at the first, smallest breakdown.

1. EHIC vs. Travel Insurance – 5 Key Differences

The EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) provides access to medical care under the rules applicable to citizens of a given country. Sounds good? In practice, this means huge costs if you don't know local regulations.

  • Medical transport to Poland: This is the most important point. EHIC never covers the costs of medical transport to your home country. If you break a leg in the Alps or suffer an injury in Croatia, returning by ambulance can cost from PLN 5,000 to even PLN 30,000. A travel policy covers this cost 100%.
  • Mountain rescue: In Austria, Slovakia, or Italy, mountain rescue operations (e.g., helicopter use) are fully paid. The cost of a helicopter lift is often 3-5 thousand Euro. EHIC does not refund this.
  • Co-payment (Deductible): In many EU countries, a visit to a public doctor is partially paid by the patient (so-called "Visit Fee"). A travel policy reimburses these costs.
  • Private treatment: In tourist resorts, it is often difficult to find a public facility. Hotel doctors only accept private patients – without insurance, you will pay for the visit out of your own pocket (often EUR 100-200).
  • Dentist: Sudden toothache? EHIC rarely covers dental treatment. Good travel insurance has a limit for emergency dental treatment.

2. Car Assistance – Don't Be Caught Off Guard

A car breakdown abroad is stress that can be avoided. Polish TPL does not guarantee a tow truck in Croatia or Germany. When choosing Assistance (even short-term for 7, 15, or 30 days), pay attention to these parameters:

📏 Towing Limit

This is the most important parameter. Basic variants offer towing up to 150-200 km. This is enough to get off the highway to the nearest workshop, but not enough to get back to Poland by car. If you are going far (e.g., to Dubrovnik or Rome), look for variants with a minimum limit of 1000 km or the "towing to domicile" option.

🛠️ On-site Repair

Often the fault is trivial – a dead battery, a flat tire, locked keys inside. Good Assistance ensures a mechanic arrives to fix the car on the road, without the need to search for a workshop in a foreign country in the middle of the night.

🏨 Replacement Car and Hotel

What if the repair takes 3 days? Do you want to spend that time at a gas station? The policy covers hotel costs for the driver and passengers and provides a replacement car so you can continue your journey or return home.

3. How Does Trip Cancellation Cost Insurance Work?

Planning an expensive vacation? Booking a hotel on Booking.com or Airbnb in advance? A child's illness, sudden job loss, or an unfortunate accident can disrupt your plans. Trip Cancellation Cost Insurance allows you to recover up to 100% of the funds paid for accommodation and flight tickets if you have to cancel your trip due to important unforeseen circumstances.

4. What to Do in Case of an Accident Abroad? Step-by-Step Instructions

Stress and a language barrier are bad advisors. Here's what to do if you have a policy purchased through Winiety24:

  1. Ensure safety: Put on a reflective vest (mandatory for all passengers in many countries!), set up a warning triangle, and get off the road behind the barriers.
  2. Do not call a random tow truck: In many countries (e.g., Slovakia or Hungary), "tow truck hunters" operate, listening on CB radio and offering help for exorbitant rates.
  3. Call the insurer's Emergency Center: You will find the number on your PDF policy on your phone. The consultant speaks Polish.
  4. Provide location and policy number: The insurer will arrange verified roadside assistance itself, which will settle cashless.
  5. Medical documentation: If you use a doctor's help, collect all bills, medical reports, and receipts for medicines. They are necessary for reimbursement of costs upon return.

5. Destination Countries – Specific Regulations

Each travel destination generates different risks. Here are our recommendations:

  • Croatia: High summer temperatures often cause engine overheating and cooling system failures. Assistance is absolutely essential. It's also worth remembering about sea urchin insurance (Personal Accident).
  • Austria and Italy (Skiing): Mandatory TPL on the slopes in Italy! Without it, you risk a fine and loss of your ski pass. Helicopter rescue costs in the Alps are huge – make sure your travel policy covers them.
  • Czech Republic and Slovakia: Close by, but fines are high. The police strictly check vehicle equipment (reflective vests for every passenger, a set of light bulbs).

Questions and Answers (FAQ) - Extended

Does the policy become active immediately after purchase?

Yes. For most companies (e.g., CUK, Kiosk Polis), protection starts from the moment indicated in the form (date and time) or from the moment payment is posted. There is no waiting period for Assistance or travel insurance.

Do I need to print the policy?

There is no legal requirement to have a printout. However, in a stressful situation (accident, dead phone battery), a paper version in the glove compartment is invaluable. If you don't print it – be sure to save the PDF file to your phone's memory (offline access) and send it to your co-passengers.

What does the "Alcohol Clause" mean?

This is an extension of the insurance that provides protection (coverage of medical costs) even if the incident occurred after consuming alcohol (e.g., a broken leg at a barbecue or during a party). Note: This does not apply to driving vehicles!

Does Assistance cover breakdowns near home?

It depends on the variant. Look for options with a low kilometer limit (e.g., "from 0 km"). Cheaper Assistance variants often only work from 20 or 50 km from your place of residence. "Europe" variants offered by our partners usually work throughout the EU.

I have chronic illnesses. Do I need to declare them?

Yes! If you suffer from a chronic illness (hypertension, diabetes, asthma), you must tick the "Chronic illnesses" option when purchasing travel insurance. Without this, the insurer may refuse to cover treatment costs if the deterioration of your health results from this illness.
