Slovakia without a vignette 2026: How much time do you lose? [REPORT]

Słowacja bez winiety

Slovakia without a vignette? We checked how much time you really lose by avoiding toll sections (Report 2026)

Update: March 2026 | Section: Road analyses

When planning a trip to Southern Europe, many Polish drivers consider bypassing toll motorways in Slovakia. The motivation is usually the desire to save a few euros. However, in 2026, with the current traffic intensity and modern section speed measurement system on national roads, the situation looks completely different than just a few years ago.

The Winiety24.eu team conducted road tests on the most popular transit routes. We compared travel time, fuel consumption, and overall driver fatigue. Is the "saving" on a vignette a real gain, or just a costly illusion?

Key findings from the 2026 report:

  • Time loss: On average, 74 minutes of extra driving for every 200 km of the route.
  • Economy: Higher fuel consumption in out-of-town driving (mountains, traffic lights, jams) negates up to 60% of savings from not having a vignette.
  • Risk: Fines for not having a vignette are automatically enforceable in 2026 thanks to the E-Vignette 2.0 system.

Test route: Zwardoń – Bratislava (D1 vs Road 61)

This is the section most often chosen by people traveling to Vienna or towards the Adriatic. The D1 motorway offers a smooth journey at 130 km/h. The alternative road No. 61 leads through numerous city centers (including Žilina, Trenčín, Trnava).

ParameterToll route (Vignette)Free route
Travel time2h 10 min3h 45 min
Average speed118 km/h54 km/h
Number of speed cameras2 (fixed)14 (including section speed cameras)

Conclusion: By choosing the free road, you lose over 1.5 hours. It's worth asking yourself: is your free time during vacation worth less than the cost of a 10-day electronic vignette for Slovakia?

Fuel trap – why does "free" cost more?

Many people forget about physics. Driving on the motorway with cruise control is the most economical mode for modern engines. National roads in Slovakia are winding, mountainous, and saturated with pedestrian crossings. Constant braking and accelerating drastically increase fuel consumption.

In our test, a C-segment car consumed on average 1.8 liters more fuel per 100 km when bypassing motorways. For a 400 km journey (round trip), the cost of additional fuel almost equaled the price of a vignette. The balance was zero, not counting 3 lost hours of life and enormous stress.

Important: From 2026, Slovak NDS camera systems are integrated with the Polish CEPiK system. A fine notice (approx. 150 EUR) is usually sent by post to Poland within 14 days of the offense.

When is it worth avoiding motorways?

Avoiding toll roads only makes sense in one case: when your goal is local tourism. If you want to visit Orava Castle or stop at local "kolibas" for traditional bryndzové halušky, national roads will be a great choice. However, if your goal is fast transit – avoiding motorways is an economic mistake.

Don't risk it, travel comfortably

Ordering an e-vignette online takes less time than waiting at traffic lights in Žilina.
