Penalty Points in 2026 – Return to More Favorable Rules

The most important information for drivers is that, after a short period of stricter regulations, the principle of a one-year validity period for penalty points has been restored.

Key Principle: Penalty points are removed from the record after 1 year from the date the fine is paid. If you do not pay the fine, the points will remain in the system much longer.

Additionally, drivers can once again participate in re-education courses organized by WORD. Such a course, taken once every 6 months, allows for the deduction of 6 oldest penalty points from the account (applies to individuals who have held a driving license for over a year).

Speeding Fine Tariff (including recidivism)

In 2026, the system of penalties for speeding is based on progression and a recidivism mechanism. Recidivism applies to drivers who commit the same offense (exceeding the speed limit by at least 31 km/h) within 2 years of the last penalty.

Pedestrian Safety – Strict Penalties

Protecting pedestrians is a priority for the Polish police. Offenses in this area result in an immediate addition of a large number of penalty points (often 15 pts) and a high fine:

  • Overtaking at a pedestrian crossing: 1500 zł (3000 zł for recidivism) + 15 pts.
  • Bypassing a vehicle that has stopped before a pedestrian crossing: 1500 zł / 3000 zł + 15 pts.
  • Failing to yield right-of-way to a pedestrian: 1500 zł / 3000 zł + 15 pts.

Penalties for Lack of Road Tolls in Europe

Although speeding fines dominate statistics in Poland, for trips abroad, the biggest risk is penalties for lacking vignettes. For example, if your destination is Prague, the necessary vignette for the Czech Republic should be purchased before entering the highway. Czech police and customs services use real-time license plate scanning systems.

Similarly strict rules apply to our western and southern neighbors. If you plan to travel through the Alps, make sure that the vignette for Austria is assigned to your vehicle. The fine for its absence (so-called substitute fee) is usually 120 euro for passenger cars.

Technical and Formal Offenses

In 2026, the fine tariff also draws attention to technical condition and formalities:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol (0.2-0.5 per mille): arrest or fine of at least 2500 zł and driving ban.
  • Using a phone without a hands-free kit: 500 zł and 12 pts.
  • Lack of license plates or obscuring them: 500 zł.
  • Not wearing seatbelts: 100 zł and 5 pts.

Remember to check not only your car but also the required tolls in other countries before each longer trip. On our website, you will find comprehensive support – from information on penalties to purchasing products such as a vignette for Hungary or a vignette for Switzerland.
