Incorrect registration country on vignette – what to do? | Winiety24.eu

I bought a vignette with the correct number, but the registration country is different – what now?

This is one of the most common mistakes when purchasing road tolls independently. You have the correct license plate number, but a different country appears in the system. Are you at risk of a fine? Can this be corrected? We explain step by step.

Is a vignette with an incorrect registration country valid?

The short answer is: Unfortunately, no. Control systems in countries like Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary operate based on automatic license plate scanning (OCR). The algorithm does not look for the number itself, but for a pair: License Plate Number + Vehicle Registration Country.

If you are traveling in a car registered in Poland (PL), but the vignette shows, for example, Germany (D) or the Czech Republic (CZ), the system will assume that your vehicle does not have a paid passage. As a result, despite spending money, you expose yourself to high financial penalties, which in some countries can amount to several thousand zlotys.

Important: Online vignettes purchased through our service are verified by consultants, which minimizes the risk of the customer making such an error.

Why is the country of registration so important?

Many people assume that since a license plate number (e.g., EPA12345) is unique, the country doesn't matter. Nothing could be further from the truth. In Europe, identical sequences of characters can occur on license plates from different countries. The IT systems of highway operators (such as ASFINAG in Austria or edalnice in the Czech Republic) treat the country as an integral part of vehicle identification.

  • Automatic gantries: Cameras scan not only the characters but also the blue stripe (euroband) with the country code.
  • Databases: A vignette assigned to the wrong country is simply invisible to a controller looking for a Polish car.

What to do if you notice an error?

1. Error noticed before validity begins

If you bought a vignette "in advance" (e.g., with a start date in two days), you have the best chance for a cost-free correction. In most systems (Czech Republic, Slovakia), data can be edited until the vignette becomes active. If you purchased via the Winiety24.eu contact form, contact our support immediately.

2. Error noticed after validity begins

Here the situation is more difficult. In the case of electronic vignettes that are already active, most national systems do not allow changing the country of registration.

  • Hungary: Correction is possible at a customer service office (requires an administrative fee).
  • Czech Republic: No possibility to change the country after validity has started – usually, a new, correct vignette must be purchased.
  • Austria: Systems are very strict. An error in the country means no valid vignette.

Recommendation: If you are already on the road and discovered an error, the safest (though painful for the wallet) solution is to purchase a new, correct electronic vignette. The cost of a new vignette is many times lower than the fine, which in Austria is a minimum of 120 EUR (Ersatzmaut) or more in the case of administrative proceedings.

How to avoid errors when buying vignettes?

When filling out the form on the winiety24.eu website, always double-check:

  1. License plate number: Make sure you haven't confused "0" (zero) with the letter "O".
  2. Country of registration: Ensure that the selected country matches the vehicle's registration document.
  3. Start date: Remember that some vignettes (e.g., Austrian for private individuals) have a grace period, unless you are buying as a business.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will I get a refund for an incorrectly purchased vignette?

In the case of digital vignettes that have already been generated in the state system, refunds are usually not possible due to the nature of the product (digital service performed immediately). However, it is always worth contacting us to check the order status.

I made a mistake in one letter of the number, but the country is correct. What now?

In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, a correction of up to 2 characters in the license plate number is allowed, provided that the vignette has not yet been activated or very little time has passed since the purchase. An error in the country, however, is treated more seriously than a typo.

What data is visible on the PDF confirmation?

The PDF document you receive from us shows the license plate number, the country of origin of the vehicle, and the period of validity. Please verify this data immediately after receiving the email.
